What to do if a Baby is Choking

By  Carole Johnson – OneLife Training (Gold Member)

Knowing what to do in an emergency can feel daunting, especially when a baby is involved. The good news is that choking follows clear signs and simple steps. With the right knowledge and a calm approach, you can act quickly and confidently if needed.

Spotting the signs of choking

The first step is to assess the baby’s face and chest. A baby who is choking may show:

  • A distressed or panicked expression

  • No crying or sound

  • Little or no chest movement

  • A blue or grey tinge to the skin (in more serious cases)

If a baby is silent but clearly struggling, this may indicate a complete airway obstruction, and immediate action is needed.

Positioning and back blows

If a baby is choking:

  • Support the baby’s head and jaw securely

  • Position them face down along your forearm, with their head lower than their body

  • Deliver up to five firm back blows between the shoulder blades using the heel of your hand

  • After each back blow, check to see if the obstruction has cleared

Chest thrusts

If the back blows do not dislodge the object:

  • Turn the baby onto their back, keeping their head supported and angled downwards

  • Use two fingers to give up to five chest thrusts in the centre of the chest, just below the nipple line

  • Check after each thrust to see if the airway is clear

When to call 999

If the object does not come out after a cycle of back blows and chest thrusts, call 999 immediately. Continue alternating between the two techniques until help arrives.

Confidence comes from preparation

These techniques can feel intimidating at first, which is completely natural. Practising them during training, with clear guidance and reassurance, makes all the difference if you ever face a real emergency.
