Banter or Bullying? Know the Difference at Work
By Louise Jenner, The Dream Job Coach (Platinum Member)
In a workplace full of personalities, humour can be a great connector, but when does playful banter cross the line into something more harmful?
Here are five top tips to help you stay on the right side of that fine line:
1. Read the Room
If everyone’s laughing, it’s likely banter. If someone looks uncomfortable, it’s time to check yourself.
2. Watch the Power Balance
Jokes from the boss land differently than those from peers. Always punch up, never down.
3. Mind the Repeats
What feels like a running joke to one person can feel like repeated jabs to another.
4. Drop the Outdated Lines
Phrases like “I’m just the office mum” may seem harmless, but can reinforce tired gender roles. You’re a professional, so own it.
5. Be Willing to Mediate
If tensions rise, mediation can help. DWIB’s silver member, Serena Davis of Latitude Mediation, offers calm, confidential support to move things forward.
💡 Top Tip: Respect doesn’t kill humour – it makes it cleverer.
If you’re feeling drained by your work environment, know that you don’t have to stay stuck. I’m here to help you find a role where you’re appreciated, not diminished.
